Ghent Montessori School

Ghent Montessori School is an authentic Montessori community serving children from 18 months through eighth grade.

Rooted in the heart of Norfolk, we've been inspiring independent thinkers and compassionate leaders in Hampton Roads since 1978.

Education for every child

At Ghent Montessori School, our mission is to encourage the total development of the child by meeting each child’s needs individually. We provide them with a prepared, comprehensive Montessori environment that cultivates independent thought, empathy for others, social awareness and confidence. Through this approach, children develop a strong foundation to succeed in the future.

Education for all ages

All of our classrooms are multi-age, typically spanning three years, giving each child the chance to grow from a newcomer to a leader within their classroom community. Learning is individualized and driven by each child’s natural self-motivation, with a variety of activities that go beyond those found in traditional schools. This approach fosters independence, confidence, and lifelong learning.

From Our Parents

“The practical life curriculum has been amazing for our home environment. We strongly feel that our child was encouraged to learn what brings him joy and at a pace that worked well for him. We thank you for that and continue to recommend GMS to our friends in the community.”

The teacher provided an invaluable educational foundation to our daughter. I can't stress how much I admire her dedication to the children, her calmness and organization, and the profound difference she makes in the lives of her children. My family is beyond grateful for the educational and emotional education that she got under her teacher’s steady, loving guidance. I'm excited for what the future holds for GMS.

“You all have been so amazing. We were blown away by the experience at Ghent Montessori. To say that our child thrived at GMS is an understatement. We saw her blossom into a confident, smart, and social little human. You have left such an impression on our family, and we can't thank you enough! We appreciate your before and aftercare staff, the quality work cycles, and most importantly the safe and nurturing environment you provided.”

We are very grateful that life circumstances brought our son to Ghent Montessori. He thrived in middle school. Because of the great middle school guides, our son was able to find his niche and grow his strengths. His self-esteem soared. He is very prepared for high school and doing great in his first quarter.

“This place is truly special. The community of parents is unparalleled and the culture of the school is something out of a dream. We received tons of communication from Administration as well as from my children's teacher. There were regular events for parents including child development seminars, social events, and opportunities to celebrate our children's achievement. They didn't just learn letters and numbers, they helped the whole child. From the inside out. My children thrived there and I can see the echoes of their leadership months later as my children have transitioned into other learning environments.”
